The Depok Police in West Java have arrested five juveniles who allegedly killed a man they mistakenly identified as their rival.

Depok Police crime unit chief Comr. Deddy Kurniawan said they were caught at their homes on Jl. Baru Proklamasi in Sukmajaya district.

The story went back to Wednesday when the victim, identified only as RAS, was enjoying a cup of coffee with his friend at a stall on the street. RAS and his friend noticed two groups of teenagers brawling near Proklamasi police post.

“RAS and his friend reportedly stepped out of the stall only to see that the brawl continued to Jl. Proklamasi, which was on RAS’ way home,” Deddy said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.

On his way home, suddenly some teenagers involved in the brawl appeared and mistook RAS as one of their rivals from the other group.

“Mistaking RAS as their rival, they chased down the victim and some of them allegedly slashed him with sickles,” he added.

RAS suffered severe wounds to his stomach and back and he died at the scene.

Deddy said the police were investigating the case by gathering evidence and questioning witnesses. (vla)
