Chief of development and achievement of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) Susy Susanti praised the victory of Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin at the World Junior Championship in Kazan, Russia on Sunday.
The pair managed to secure the Suhandinata Cup in the men’s doubles category, the first Indonesians to do so since the competition was first held 27 years ago.
Three pairs of shuttlers competed in three different categories, but the first two pairs, Leo Rolly Carnando-Indah Cahya Sari Jamil, who competed in the mixed doubles category and Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma-Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi in the women’s doubles category, failed to secure a trophy.
“The mixed doubles pair was unable to go all out, while the women’s doubles pair failed to recover from pressure,” Susy said, as quoted by on Monday.
“As for Leo and Daniel, they managed to build a solid playing pattern. Leo, especially, deserves praise as he managed to stay focused despite his earlier bad result in the mixed doubles.”
Susy expected the win would inspire other junior shuttlers to do the same, giving their all while playing. However, she also warned that such victory should not be overpraised. These junior athletes, she added, would still need to hone their skills through training and discipline.
The junior shuttlers will soon attend two more local tournaments, the Superleague Junior 2019 tournament in Magelang, Central Java and the Indonesia International Challenge 2019 in Malang, East Java.
