Indonesia’s junior badminton players dominated at the 2019 BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championship, also known as the Suhandinata Cup, on Saturday and brought home their first ever trophy after beating China 3-1 in the final.
The victory marked a new milestone for Team Indonesia in the cup as it failed in 2013, 2014 and 2015’s finals.
Women’s doubles pair Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Putri Syaikah displayed a laudable performance in the deciding match, conquering Li Yi Jing and Tan Ning of China 16-21, 25-23, 21-13 in 1 hour and 28 minutes on the final day of the cup, which was held in Kazan, Russia.
Febriana acknowledged the charm of the Indonesian fans, who endlessly supported her and Putri during the match and gave a strong boost to the pair.
“Losing the first game made me quite nervous. However, the support from the fans somehow transferred into energy for us to stay focused and achieve the victory. At least it left me with no other choice than to go all out,” Febriana said as quoted by badmintonindonesia.org on Sunday.
She recalled she had focused more on how to steal the next point despite projecting a victorious end. She realized extra hard work was mandatory to face the worthy opponent.
As for Putri, the victory was sweet redemption for her.
“I have been put in a similar situation and lost. [Saturday’s match] was a different situation and we were able to prove ourselves,” she said.
In the best-of-five battle, Indonesia enjoyed an early 2-0 lead thanks to solid performances from Daniel Marthin and Indah Cahya Sari Jamil in the mixed doubles as well as Putri Kusuma Wardani in the women’s singles.
Daniel and Indah defeated Feng Yan Zhe and Lin Fang Ling 21-18, 18-21, 21-11, while Putri beat Zhou Meng 21-18, 20-22, 21-14.
Team Indonesia held its breath after Bobby Setiabudi failed to win his battle against Liu Liang. Bobby, who stole the second game, ended the match with a 17-21, 21-17, 20-22 loss.
Febriana admitted Bobby’s loss was a disappointment, hoping that he could learn something from it.
“There are plenty of days and competitions ahead for Bobby to beat. I hope he can learn from his mistakes and keep up the fighting spirit.”
After collecting three wins, Indonesia didn’t have to play the last match, allowing Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin in the men’s doubles to celebrate the victory with the rest of the team members without playing.
